Here's a practical guide to loading your dental autoclave correctly:
Clean & Dry Instruments First → Ensure tools are scrubbed, rinsed, and completely dry – no leftover debris or moisture.
Use Proper Packaging → Bag instruments in sterilization pouches if storing after cycles. → For immediate use, unwrapped is okay for solid metal tools only.
Fill Water Tank → Use distilled water only (tap water clogs the machine).
Arrange Items Like Books on a Shelf → Stand pouches/trays upright, never flat or stacked. → Place heavy items (instrument trays) at the bottom.
Give Everything Breathing Room → Leave space between items – steam needs to surround all surfaces. → Avoid touching chamber walls, roof, or door.
Hollow Tools Need Care → Handpieces/syringes: Place tip-down so steam enters the hollow parts. → Don’t bundle cords – lay them loosely coiled.
| Don't Do This | Why It's Bad |
|---|---|
| Overstuff the chamber | Steam can't reach all surfaces → germs survive |
| Mix wrapped & unwrapped tools | Unwrapped items contaminate sterile packs |
| Seal pouches against walls | Prevents steam penetration → wet packs |
| Ignore weight limits | Damages the autoclave tray or racks |
Wipe the door gasket – Ensure it's clean and flexible.
Shut the door firmly – Listen for the seal click.
Choose the RIGHT cycle: → "B-Class/Vacuum" for pouches/hollow tools → "Gravity" for unwrapped solids
